What’s at stake?
During the 2024 legislative session, a bill was filed in the Mississippi House proposing to move MSMS from the MUW campus to the MSU campus. Later in that same session, a substitute bill was proposed that would have transferred control of MUW to MSU. (see this summary in the Commercial Dispatch) Neither bill passed out of committee in 2024 and no bills were proposed in the 2025 or 2026 sessions to change control of MUW, but there is reason to believe that these efforts have not gone away.
Additionally, Nora Miller announced her retirement as the president of MUW in January, 2026 and end her term in June, 2026. The IHL board in September, 2026 started the process of looking for a new president of MUW.
